Sam’s Wish Fund at Kids Path of AuthoraCare was formally established in 2009 through the efforts of Doug Shambley in partnership with Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, now known as AuthoraCare Collective.

In honor of his brother, Ricky Shambley, Doug founded the Tricky Ricky Ride & Music Festival, with Samantha “Sam” Harvell becoming the first beneficiary of this meaningful memorial event.

The fund was formally named in memory of Sam after her passing. A Kids Path patient from Burlington, North Carolina, Sam’s spunky and bright personality left a lasting impression and inspired Doug to continue raising funds to support terminally ill children like her.

Originally created to grant special wishes, Sam’s Wish Fund has grown over time to meet the evolving needs of families served by Kids Path. Today, the fund provides financial assistance and support to families caring for medically fragile children. Notably, approximately seventy percent of the Kids Path program is funded through charitable contributions.

In 2014, the program expanded to include Sam’s Wish Fund Holiday Cheer, providing holiday gifts and essential items to Kids Path patients and their siblings who qualify, now serving families across 13 North Carolina counties. This effort would not be possible without the continued support of our communities, businesses, and individuals.

While many individuals and organizations have contributed to this mission over the years, a dedicated group of volunteers including Allison Nichols, Walter “Bird Dog” Riddle, and Doug Shambley have remained steadfast in leading and supporting annual fundraising efforts.
